Make Adult Opening Practical

Child resistance is not intended to make packaging impossible to use. A properly developed structure should create a deliberate opening sequence while remaining practical for intended adult users. Release points, arrows or opening instructions can be incorporated where appropriate. The amount of force required, location of the locking feature and movement of the tray all influence usability. This balance is one reason tested child-resistant packaging should be distinguished from an ordinary tight-fitting drawer box.

Keep the Cartridge Locked in Position

The security mechanism controls access to the package. The insert controls movement of the cartridge. Paperboard, EVA, foam, molded pulp or another suitable insert can hold the cartridge in a defined position. The cavity can support the tank body while leaving suitable clearance around the mouthpiece and threaded connector. For multiple cartridges, separate channels can prevent direct contact between units.

Coordinate the Insert With the Lock

Internal components should not interfere with the CR mechanism. A tray that becomes distorted by an oversized insert may not move through the outer sleeve correctly. Likewise, an insert that places excessive pressure on the box walls can affect locking tolerances. Leave Room for Instructions and Required Information

A locking package may need opening instructions in addition to normal product information. The dieline can reserve areas for product identification, cartridge specifications, batch or lot information, barcodes, QR codes, applicable warnings and market-specific labeling. Opening graphics should remain clear without interfering with mandatory information. Planning these areas before finishing and branding are applied helps prevent overcrowding.

Customize the Exterior Without Changing the Mechanism

CR packaging can still carry a complete brand identity. CMYK or Pantone printing can create the main artwork system, while foil stamping, embossing, debossing or Spot UV can highlight selected elements. Matte or soft-touch finishes can change the surface feel. However, decorative treatments should not interfere with locking points, instructions or dimensional tolerances that are important to the opening mechanism.
