Start With the Rigid Board Core

The structural foundation of a turned-edge box is typically a rigid chipboard or greyboard core. Board thickness can be selected according to the dimensions, product weight and box structure. Smaller presentation boxes may require a different specification from large corporate kits or multi-product gift sets. Because the board remains permanently formed, it gives turned-edge packaging the firm walls and defined corners associated with setup boxes.

Wrap the Board Instead of Printing Directly on It

The decorative surface is applied separately from the rigid core. Printed art paper, textured papers, specialty stocks, foil-faced materials, fabric-like wraps or other suitable coverings can be bonded over the board. This gives brands more freedom to control surface color, texture and finish without relying on the appearance of the underlying structural material. The wrap can carry full-color artwork before it is applied to the finished box.

How the Turned Edge Is Made

The covering material extends past the edge of the rigid board rather than stopping flush with it. That excess material is folded—or “turned”—around the board edge and secured on the inside. Accurate cutting, folding and corner alignment are important because the edge remains visible whenever the box is opened. For presentation kits, several cavities can organize components into a controlled arrangement instead of leaving products loose inside the box. Interior papers and liners can also coordinate with or contrast against the exterior wrap.

Use Finishing on the Wrap

Because the decorative paper is prepared before final wrapping, it can support many premium finishing techniques. Foil stamping can highlight logos or borders. Embossing and debossing add tactile depth, while Spot UV introduces selective gloss. Matte, gloss or soft-touch treatments can influence the overall surface feel. The artwork should be positioned with the final folds and turned edges in mind so important graphics do not disappear around corners or wrap lines.

Turned Edge vs Folding Carton Packaging

A folding carton is normally cut and creased from thinner paperboard and supplied flat before assembly. A turned-edge rigid box uses a heavier pre-formed board structure wrapped with a separate decorative material. That difference gives turned-edge packaging greater structural presence and a more presentation-focused construction, although it generally requires a more involved manufacturing process.
